Iron and fire are the foundation of this prosperous farm. And many, many working hours.




Did you know that the blacksmith was one of the most important persons in pre-industrial societies? They made weapons, they took care of the horses shoes and carriages, and often the horses themselves. They made, or increased the value or lifespan of, plows, farm tools and domestic utensils  They were the key (literally speaking) of many important functions in everyday life. Maybe they weren't all as rich as the family at Smedstua, but important they were.

This farm is in part based on an existing building: Detlistua at the Sverresborg museum. After starting working on it I realised that also Disney had been inspired by the same building, when they made the summer cabin for Elsa and Anna from the Frozen movie.
